Quite a broad topic but, one that's always been interesting to many. I've always seen them as messengers and soldiers. They can also mingle among us, it seems.
Genesis 6:2-4
"That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown."
We know 'sons of God' are angels: Job 1:6
"Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them."
2 Peter 2:4,5
"For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgement.
And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly."
Jude v6
"And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgement of the great day."
At one point during the Tribulation will be the war in Heaven, perhaps the beginning of it. Revelations 12:7-12
"And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels.
And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto death.
Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and of the great sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth he hath but a short time."
Gabriel showed Daniel the interpretation of his vision. Daniel 8:15-25 (Gabriel: "Hero of God") Luke 1: 11-20, Gabriel talked to Zechariah about the birth of his son, John the Baptist. Because of Zechariah's unbelief that one so old would be a father, he couldn't speak until his son's birth of what he had seen or heard. Gabriel then went to talk to Mary about her role in the future as well as her son, Jesus that she would bare. v26-38.
Michael, the archangel "...,when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee." Jude v9. I found that interesting since Moses died and was buried by God himself. Deutoronomy 34:5,6
"So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord.
And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Beth-peor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day."
Then I remembered that until the Lord was buried and rose again, death and the grave's keys were bound to the law, not grace.
Everyone knows that angels are the army of God. One of my favorite accounts is with Elisha; 2 Kings 6:15-17.
"And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do?
And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.
And Elisha prayed, and said Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha."
I know I've mentioned this testimony before, but it's another example that even today, we're not on our own. A woman told of a road trip when I was stationed in Utah of being on a long, lonely highway and her car died. When she couldn't get it restarted, she bowed her head and prayed. She asked for help with the car and if it wasn't too much, a glass of tea. As soon as she raised her head, she noticed a wrecker pull up behind her. A man got out and walked up to her as she rolled down the window and asked what was wrong. She mentioned the car had died so, he had her raise the hood as he went to get his tools. When he returned, he handed her a glass of tea, then fixed her car while she waited. In no time, she was back on the road, thanking God the whole way.
Amen
