Now that we're all done patching our computer systems and compensating for unpatchable devices that jumped forward another hour last Sunday, the data is starting to roll in that our extra weeks of Daylight Saving Time achieved exactly squat. Ars Technica, a technology site, has a story on the lack of savings and references a story by Reuters as their evidence.
I have long despised Daylight Saving Time as another piece of junk the government uses to make us all feel better about doing something, even though we really aren't doing anything. As if that weren't bad enough, I heard today that Congress is considering a ban on the incandescent light bulb, saying they are inefficient and wasteful and should be replaced with compact fluorescent bulbs. If that's true, it's just another example of doing something stupid just so you can say you did something. If they really want to save energy, they'll ban both incandescent and compact fluorescent bulbs, and replace all of them with LED bulbs. LED bulbs really do save energy, don't contain mercury like fluorescents, and never burn out, meaning less waste in the landfills. But you and I both know that they won't, since that would mean billions in lost revenue to the bulb manufacturers.

Gasoline Use Up!
I saw a news story this week that any decreased use of energy resulting from the increased daylight hours was offset by increased use of gasoline that experts also attributed to the increased daylight. They said that the increased daylight led to families making trips to parks that they would not have made normally. So, it appears that it did not have the desired affect.

Family Values
Leave it to a republican to turn this into a family values debate! :)
